The Spice of Life has an incredibly rich and eclectic musical history.
Its walls have seen everything from intimate folk sessions to raucous punk gigs and, of course, a huge amount of top-tier jazz.
Who?, I hear you say...well
The venue became a thriving hub for jazz in the late 1990s and continues to host world-class talent. Some of the most notable names include:
Jamie Cullum: The multi-award-winning jazz-pop singer and pianist played here, contributing to the venue's reputation as a key London jazz spot.
Soweto Kinch: The highly acclaimed saxophonist and rapper, a major figure in contemporary British jazz.
Darius Brubeck: The son of the legendary Dave Brubeck, a celebrated jazz pianist and composer in his own right.
Daryl Sherman: A renowned American jazz vocalist and pianist, bringing international prestige to the venue.
The club also regularly features a "who's who" of the current UK jazz scene, including artists like Quentin Collins, Vasilis Xenopoulos, and many others who are central to London's vibrant jazz community.
Before its jazz and punk eras, the venue (then known as the Scots Hoose) was one of the most important folk clubs in Britain. Its stage was graced by:
Bob Dylan
Paul Simon
Cat Stevens
Bert Jansch
Sandy Denny
The Strawbs
Ewan MacColl
Roy Harper
Ralph McTell
In the late 1970s, the venue was a regular haunt for the burgeoning punk scene, with famous patrons and performers including:
The Sex Pistols
The Stranglers
Buzzcocks
Spandau Ballet
This incredible mix of genres is what makes The Spice of Life such a special and historic London venue.
