The "Jazz by the Sea" tradition continues!
We are back for 2026 with a spectacular dual-programme that bridges the gap between the golden age of New Orleans and the cutting edge of contemporary jazz.
While our ticketed headliners command the spotlight, the soul of the Swanage Jazz Festival spills out into the town’s historic pubs, hotels, and quirky social clubs. The Free Fringe is where the atmosphere truly ignites—expect impromptu jam sessions, local legends, and a "jazz trail" that winds through the heart of the town - further updates on 2026 fringe venues expected soon..
Pubs with Character: From the traditional oak-beamed charm of The Black Swan Inn to the buzzing energy of the Fonc Lounge, our fringe venues offer an intimate way to experience the music. Whether you’re tucked into a corner with a local Purbeck ale or dancing on the seafront, the fringe ensures that music is never more than a few steps away.
The Saturday Jazz Parade: Don’t miss the festival’s most iconic visual—the Saturday morning parade. A brass-led explosion of color and sound that marches along Shore Road, it’s the perfect bridge between the town’s Victorian heritage and the festival’s vibrant spirit.
Swanage isn’t just a backdrop; it’s a co-headliner. Nestled at the eastern edge of the Jurassic Coast, the town offers a unique "time-capsule" feel that complements the timeless nature of jazz.
The Scenic Route
Arrive in Style: If you’re coming from further afield, ditch the car at Norden and arrive via the Swanage Railway. There is nothing quite like pulling into the station on a heritage steam train to set the mood for a weekend of classic sounds.
A Natural Interval: Need a breather between sets? Take the short hike up to Durlston Country Park. The dramatic cliffs and the Great Globe offer the best views of the bay, providing a moment of coastal zen before the evening’s high-energy performances.
The Victorian Pier: Perfect for a mid-afternoon stroll with an ice cream. It’s one of the few remaining timber piers in the UK and offers a stunning vantage point to look back at the festival tents and the town nestled in the hills.
Local Flavors: Swanage is famous for its seafood and traditional Dorset fare. Between shows, grab some fresh-caught fish and chips to eat on the stone quay—just watch out for the local seagulls, who have a notorious ear for music (and an eye for your chips!).
Walkable Rhythm: Swanage is wonderfully compact. Most fringe venues are within a 10-minute walk of each other, so bring comfortable shoes!
Stay Late: The fringe venues often hum with energy long after the main marquee lights go down. If you're looking for that late-night "New Orleans" feel, follow the sound of the sax through the High Street.
The "Secret" Spots: Keep an eye on our chalkboard updates outside the Mowlem Theatre for last-minute fringe additions and pop-up performances.
