    Algarve

Ruled by the Moors for several centuries and separated from the rest of Portugal by a row of hills, the Algarve has a culture, climate and coastline all of its own. From rocky coves and sandy beaches, to traditional hill towns and modern resorts, there are plenty of contrasts to discover here. Salgados is set an area of outstanding natural beauty, beside an unspoilt sandy beach, Praia dos Salgados.

    Salgados

The hotel has an enviable setting in a peaceful location adjacent to the dunes of Praia dos Salgados, reached via a 200-metre long boardwalk, and an 18-hole golf course. Decked walkways continue parallel to the shore, perfect for leisurely strolls. Besides the golf course is Lagoa dos Salgados, a wetland nature reserve that’s a haven for a variety of birdlife. There are a number of hiking trails in the surrounding countryside, and a choice of water sports available from the beach. The small village of Guia, famous for its piri-piri chicken, is five kilometres away while the lively bars and restaurants of Albufeira are six kilometres away. You can visit Albufeira courtesy of Saga's shuttle bus which runs four times a week. There’s also a local bus stop 900 metres from the hotel from where a regular service runs to the centre of Albufeira. Faro airport is a 45-minute drive away.

    John Shillito

Inspired by vintage recordings of early American jazz masters, John Shillito borrowed an old cornet and started his playing career whilst still a Sheffield schoolboy. His successful career as a trumpeter, jazz musician and bandleader spans over five decades – he has played and sung at all the major UK festivals, throughout Europe, in Russia and South Africa, as well as in the birthplace of jazz – New Orleans.
