Upton Jazz Fringe 3. 27th to 30th June
Word has spread about the Upton Fringe. 9 bands already booked to appear at the Swan Hotel and in partnership with local mental health charity the Nathan Tomkins Trust. The Fringe offers a wider spread of music than perhaps we are used to and 2019 will be no exception. There are still places especially for young talent and those who just want to get up and strut their stuff.
We are pleased to welcome LM Project and their brand of JazzPop when we get right on trend on Saturday evening 29th June…Not as crazy as Jazz, not as cheesy as Pop! Louie Miller and her band have one thing in common...the love of the music. Having supported new jazz fusion band FORQ (formed by members of Snarky Puppy) and Spice Girl Melanie C on their UK tours this year, The LM Project really are living up to their own genre defying sound JazzPop! Inspired by Prince, Led Zeppelin and Esperanza Spalding expect colourful soundscapes and catchy lyrics.
A real treat : David Newton and Alan Barnes playing ‘Lament’
You can find this on https://youtu.be/1SbdAyTYjbo. It’s exquisite. Sadly, it’s not in my front room. They will, of course, be with us at the end of June.
Welcome back to Upton : Julian Marc Stringle
We make no apology for suggesting you take a look at 9:33 minutes of Julian with Ken Peplowski back in 2017. Firstly it’s a taste of the amazing talent of two clarinet greats. Secondly, it’s the last Friends of Upton Jazz concert at Hanley Castle School. Thirdly, our good friend Paul Dunleavy of Cardiff Jazz Preservation Society filmed it, and his youtube caption pays tribute to Paul Lawrence…
‘Unfortunately the last Jazz presentation by the Friends at Hanley School. They have put on top notch shows for 31 years thanks to Paul Lawrence, Friends secretary, and a dedicated committee. Paul’s insight, knowledge of Jazz and his music choices were of a consistently high standard’ See for yourself…on https://youtu.be/6w-nVTExvpw A gorgeous ballad starts at 6:15 minutes.
